CA Storage vs Conventional Cold Storage: Which One for Produce?

Aug 26, 2026

What is the Difference Between CA Storage and Ordinary Cold Storage?

Post-harvest storage determines the quality and shelf-life of fruits and vegetables. Many growers and buyers wonder what sets CA storage apart from ordinary cold storage.

Ordinary cold storage only slows down produce metabolism by low temperature. It reduces respiration rate but cannot adjust air composition inside the room. Fruits and vegetables still ripen and age naturally, with limited storage time, and are prone to water loss and deterioration over time.

Based on low-temperature refrigeration, CA (Controlled Atmosphere) storage precisely adjusts gas composition. By tuning oxygen and carbon dioxide levels, it suppresses respiration and puts produce into a dormancy-like state.

Key Differences

Preservation Principle

Ordinary cold storage: only temperature control to slow spoilage.

CA storage: dual control of temperature and gas composition to restrain respiration.

Storage Period

Ordinary cold storage: short-term storage for fast turnover.

CA storage: greatly extended storage time for long-term preservation.

Produce Quality

Ordinary cold storage: high risk of weight loss and flavor degradation after long storage.

CA storage: minimize water loss, maintain original taste and appearance.

Post-outbound Shelf-life

Ordinary cold storage: produce ripens quickly after leaving storage, short selling window.

CA storage: longer shelf-life after unloading, ideal for long-distance export.

Application Scenarios

Ordinary cold storage: temporary storage and transit for general fresh goods.

CA storage: long-term preservation for high-value fruits and vegetables, suitable for export and off-season sales.

Summary: Ordinary cold storage meets basic cold-keeping needs. CA storage brings more advantages for long-term storage and fruit & vegetable export business.
